Back in 2012, I set foot on one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited — Koh Samui, Thailand — and it was love at first sight. The island had a way of wrapping me in its charm from the very first day.

From the night markets bursting with color, aroma, and friendly chatter, to the traditional markets where I found myself blending seamlessly with the locals, everything felt so alive. The people’s warm smiles made me feel like I belonged there.

Heaven on Earth – The Beaches

The beaches were nothing short of paradise — soft white sand, crystal-clear waters, and a gentle sea breeze that felt like it carried away every worry. During my trip, I also visited Koh Tao by catamaran fast boat, passing through Koh Phangan along the way.

In Koh Tao, I loved exploring the night markets that popped up in different locations each evening — each one with its own character and flavors. Back in Koh Samui, Ban Tai Beach and Maenam Beach became my little slices of heaven.

Daily Life & Little Joys

Every afternoon, I’d make my way to the traditional market to buy quail eggs — they offer direct raw or cooked at the place— a small but unforgettable ritual.

I learned so much about Thai culture during my stay. The people hold deep respect for their King and their country. One of the moments that truly left an impression on me was when I went to the cinema. Before the movie started, the national anthem played — and to my surprise, everyone in the theater stood up to sing along. It was a touching display of unity and patriotism.

Another thing I notice and respect was how inclusive and respectful the society was. Transgender people were openly accepted, enjoying the same rights and job opportunities as everyone else.

The Food That Stole My Heart

Of course, a big part of my love for Thailand was the food. My all-time favorites included:

  • Pad Thai

  • Tom Yum

  • Pad Kra Pao (ผัดกะเพรา)

  • Beef Panang Curry (พะแนง)

  • Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken (ข้าวผัดสับปะรดไก่)

  • Mango Sticky Rice (Khao Niao Mamuang) – I had sweet, juicy mangoes almost every day!

  • Thai Fried Bananas (Kluay Khaek / Kluay Tod)

Every bite was a burst of flavor — sweet, spicy, sour, and savory — all in perfect balance.

A Unique Airport Experience

One quirky thing I’ll never forget was Koh Samui Airport. It was unlike any other I’d seen before — open-air counters with thatched roofs, almost like stepping into a tropical resort rather than a transportation hub. No wonder it’s called a “Boutique Airport.” I later learned It is also known for being a "Tribute to Bangkok Air" and for being considered the "Best Boutique Airport in Asia". The airport's IATA code is USM, and its ICAO code is VTSM.

Phuket vs. Koh Samui

I’ve also been to Phuket, but if I’m being honest, Koh Samui felt more exclusive, serene, and personal. It wasn’t just a trip — it was an experience that touched my heart and stayed with me.

Even now, years later, I can close my eyes and hear the waves, smell the sizzling street food, and see those warm, welcoming smiles. Koh Samui isn’t just a place I visited — it’s a place I’ll always carry with me.
